Sick…

Not the face of a happy, bouncing off the walls, normal Brettman today.   Poor little guy told me last night at bedtime that his ears hurt.  Isn’t that always the case?  Kids seem to get sick at night or on weekends or holidays!  I gave him a little Motrin and he slept ok only waking up a few times in the night until 4:45 AM when he was up for good complaining that his ears were hurting.  I shuffled the big boys off to school on the bus and then headed to our pediatricians’ walk in hours.  They took one peek in the ear that Brett told her hurt the most and she knew right away why he was in so much pain.  Her comment was a “raging ear infection” in that ear and a normal ear infection in the second ear.  My goodness!  Poor child suffered all night with a raging ear infection.  I’m so glad I took him this morning.  He had no fever so I somewhat considered waiting another night to see if maybe it might go away.  Whew, glad the ol’ motherly instincts kicked in and I called in the reinforcements.

He’s been pitiful all day and holding his ears.  Guess that “raging” adjective really hit the nail on the head.  He says it feels better when he puts his blankies on his ear.  Heartbreaking!  There is nothing worse than when your child hurts and you can’t kiss it and make it all better.  I’ve just wanted to hold him all day but had to take some calls and answer some emails and take care of some things so I couldn’t do it as much as I wanted.  And that hurts me about as much as his ear infection hurts him.  He’s napping now so I’m hoping the first dose of antibiotics will somewhat kick in and he’ll be feeling a bit better this afternoon.

I’m feeling pretty lucky that we didn’t have a single doctor office visit over the winter (well, we had a Minute Clinic visit with Jake’s strep throat, but…).  And this is Brett’s first ear infection in his 2 1/2 year old life so I think we’re doing pretty darn good.  Blessed, indeed.

Emily - Poor baby. David is still fighting this cold, too. This is the hardest part of being a Mom!
