Did we really come out on the other side of winter? It sure felt like we did over the weekend and yesterday and today. I always let myself get fooled this time of year when we have a couple of nice and warm days only for mother nature to remind us that she’s not finished with winter just yet and drops the temperatures back down to COLD. So, this year, I’m not going to celebrate just yet, but man, did the warm sun feel good! I think we may be seeing rain for the next 6 days or so and all I have to say about that is AT LEAST IT IS NOT SNOW!
We got out quite a bit this past weekend and Brett, Nick and I even planted some tulip bulbs that my good friend Liz who owns Layng’s Flower Farm gave us. She gave us literally hundreds of bulbs and we didn’t quite plant them all, but the boys got busy and planted a bunch of them. I know we are late in getting them in the ground by like months, but she assured me they had been kept cold and should come up just fine. Time will tell on that but the boys had a great time planting them anyway.
Nick has always been my little green thumb. He loves to plant flowers with me and other plants. He grew the most amazing watermelons in our backyard in 2007. We went to Home Depot one day and he walked past the tiniest little watermelon plant and said he wanted to plant it. I had just about zero hope of it doing anything but that little plant took off and grew like mad in our backyard. He got incredible watermelons from it and was so proud. I think we might try some tomatoes in pots on our patio this summer.
Anyway, back to the planting over the weekend, I grabbed my camera to document our first warm outdoor experience. I decided I need to take more candid photos of our family and try not to worry so much about composition, lighting, etc. I get so carried with that and sometimes just don’t even get my camera out. I feel like I’m missing so much. I think I need an iPhone so I can capture “moments”. (hint, hint to anyone who may want to buy me a gift)

I thought it was so cute how Brett wanted to put the dirt in his dump truck when we dug the holes and then dump it back over the bulbs. He had a blast. We even found an earthworm in the dirt. Ahhhhhh, true signs of spring when the worms are mobile again!
I thought it was very funny that we’ve been waiting and hoping and wishing all the snow would melt because we all have seen enough of it and what did my boys want to play in after the planting was complete? The last strip of snow that ran the length of our yard next to the fence! They used it as sort of a luge (did I spell that right? You know the ice covered thing that the Olympians race down on small sleds?) track with the sleds that were in the yard.

Very silly if you ask me, but it was quite entertaining to watch!
The other favorite activity was finding ice and dropping it on the ground which resembled broken glass. Can you say “cold fingers”??? But they thought it was great fun.

We noticed this when we were planting…

Daffodils poking their heads up through the ground. YAY! I can not wait for blooming flowers!! What a sight for sore eyes to see some beautiful color after our dreary, drab, snow covered winter! Soon, soon, soon spring will be here. I can feel it!!
